The best approach to provide equipment protection from airborne debris and hail would be to attach Cottonwood Filter Screens (commonly called Coil Filters, cottonwood filter screens, air intake screens and rooftop unit filter screens) directly over the face of each intake hood.   The distance between the back of the hvac intake filter and the face of the coil
would provide sufficient distance to easily deflect hail  away from the unit.
